FRISCO AQUATICS SWIMMERS COLLECT BOARD GAMES, MOVIES AND POPCORN TO ACCOMPANY BOXED THANKSGIVING MEALS FOR NEEDY

“The response from the swim team is wonderful,” said Homer Bruckner, volunteer for Frisco Family Services Center “these games will help a lot of families spend good old-fashioned time together during the holiday”.  Bruckner, who has volunteered for Frisco Family Services Center for 3 years, helped unload boxes of games, DVDs and popcorn donated by Frisco Aquatics, to a designated warehouse collecting donations for the Thanksgiving Food Drive, a separate location from the food pantry which distributes approximately 35,000 pounds of food to over 350 families each month.

The Frisco Family Services Center helps low income families in crisis, and senior citizens with a special Thanksgiving Meal Package. The traditional foods that make the holiday special are typically not available from the food pantry and are a rare treat for these families.  The Thanksgiving Drive collected about 400 boxes of food and was expected to serve about 300 families, with larger families receiving 2 or 3 boxes.

Frisco Family Services Center added the program to promote family quality time to provide a positive way for families to spend time with together during the holiday season.   “The families get the opportunity to shop for a family game or movie when their boxed meals are picked up”, said Blake Ball the food pantry manager for the Frisco Center, adding “there are many large families and combined families with children who will benefit from these games.”

Frisco Aquatics swimmers, which many already donated canned food items through their schools and other sports clubs, were looking for a unique way to help these kids celebrate the week-long school holiday for Thanksgiving.   “They jumped at the opportunity to promote Family Quality Time”, said Michael Lawrence, President of Frisco Aquatics, adding “family game night is not only inexpensive but it teaches sportsmanship, life skills, teamwork and is just plain fun.”
