The 200 Club
Frisco
Aquatics is pleased to announce the formation of the 200
Club! Each year, the swimmer who drops the most time
in his or her 200-lap swim from the previous year will be awarded
the prestigious "200 Club" trophy. The trophy will be
engraved with his or her name, formally presented at the annual
banquet, and the swimmer will retain the trophy for the duration
of that year. After the following year's Swim-a-thon, the swimmer
will pass the trophy on to the new winner, whose name will also
be engraved on the trophy and so on and so forth. Click here
for a list of last year's 200 Club members and their times.
About the Swim-a-thon
Swim-a-thon 2008 will take place on Saturday April 5 at the LISD Aquatic Center (5729 Memorial Drive, The Colony) from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Swimmers have two hours in which to swim as many lengths of the pool (up to 200) as they can. Swimmers solicit "pledges:" a certain amount of money--e.g., 25 cents--per length completed. After the event, they collect those pledges and return them in their sealed Swim-a-thon envelope to their coach, who passes them on to the Swim-a-thon treasurer. Many swimmers collect donations prior to the event rather than pledges per length; this, of course, is perfectly acceptable. Swim-a-thon envelopes are due on or by Saturday, April 19.
Swimmers may arrive any time between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to begin their swim. Once they arrive, they should register at the Swim-a-thon registration desk where they'll receive a number, a swim cap, and a lane assignment. They may submit their envelope with donations at the registration desk.
Swimmers will be organized into lanes by age-group and experience, so that 8&Us need not fear being run over by Senior swimmers! They will also be assigned a timer and counter. (If you are interested in volunteering to be a Swim-a-thon timer and counter, please contact Molly Eklund-Huhn, the Swim-a-thon Volunteer Coordinator, at events@friscoaquatics.com.) Those swimmers who complete 200 lengths in under two hours are inducted into the Frisco Aquatics "200 Club" and eligible for the "200 Club" trophy, awarded to that swimmer who improves his/her time the most from one year to the next. Every swimmer participating in the Swim-a-thon receives a goody-bag and snacks!
The Swim-a-thon is closely related to another of our fundraising initiatives--the Silent Auction. Each year, members of the community donate items to Frisco Aquatics to be auctioned off at our annual banquet. This year's banquet will be held on Saturday March 29 at Clark Middle School Dining Hall (4600 Colby Drive, Frisco) from 5:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
Proceeds of the Silent Auction and Swim-a-thon benefit Frisco Aquatics in myriad ways. They help pay for lane rental fees, equipment for swimmers (e.g. medicine balls, jump ropes, stretch cords, and other specialized training equipment), scholarships, and coaches salaries and travel expenses. We hope to fund a coach's education requirement, which would require each coach to attend a reputable clinic or seminar once every two years to augment his/her coaching credentials and ensure that the FA coaching staff is on the "cutting edge." We'd like to purchase a video camera with accompanying DartSwim computer software which would allow us to film and evaluate each swimmer's stroke under (and above) water and record, organize, analyze, and share video via computer. We'd like to establish a fund to help defray travel expenses for swimmers who qualify for regional, national, and international competitions. This need has become more pressing as Frisco Aquatics secured its first Junior Nationals qualifier this past weekend with several other swimmers mere tenths of a second away. Perhaps most importantly, proceeds of the Silent Auction and Swim-a-thon help us to maintain a reasonable coach-to-swimmer ratio; we'd have the capacity to hire more coaches if necessary and not feel the pressure to fill our lanes to the brim just to meet expenses.
The Swim-a-thon Committee recognizes that kids are constantly asked to raise money for the various activities they engage in. Despite this, we strongly encourage all families to take part in the Frisco Aquatics Swim-a-thon and Silent Auction. To help motivate our swimmers, we award prizes as follows:
OVERALL PRIZES:
First prize (1): Nintendo Wii
Runner-up (2): Apple iPod nano
Honorable mention (4): Unfiltered DVD (Behind-the-scenes documentary about the sport of swimming featuring Michael Phelps and Ian Crocker, among others.)
GROUP PRIZES:
First prize within each group: "Coach for a Day"
Group to collect most donations: Team-building activity away from pool to be determined by coach
Last but not least, each swimmer will receive a Swim-a-thon t-shirt for their participation in the event. As you've probably noticed, this year we had a t-shirt design contest to determine the design of the Swim-a-thon 2008 t-shirt. FINLAY PRESLAND-BYRNE won with his super-cool "Lapometer" design!
Stay tuned for more information about the Swim-a-thon and Silent Auction. In the meantime, don't hesitate to e-mail me at jennifer@friscoaquatics.com or Molly Eklund-Huhn at events@friscoaquatics.com with any questions!
